The Back Door opens and closes.

Two people leave, one dressed for the weather and one decidedly not.

The snow is still covering the ground except for well worn paths that have turned slushy and gray-brown. But it isn't falling right now. And Edward paused, while the door swung closed, to look across the expanse. Would anything feel far enough here to him? Was it just another distraction from?


Except he could not chance these things;
And he did not trust the Front Door after all the things it had thrown at them.

Nothing wrong with being laconic.

Sometimes, words say more by their absense than they ever could by their presence.

. . . there's a paradox in that somewhere.

Edward smirked faintly, with a shake of his head.

"He was trying to give you an out."

"First of all, I was the umpire, so giving outs was my job.

"Second of all . . . I thought he was trying to give you an excuse."

[themidnightson]

"And Carlisle would fluster for any word that wasn't saying it was a defense," Edward said, with a sort of calm certainty that was very, very, very rare.

" . . . I can't quite imagine Dr. Cullen flustering."

Though Edward is probably getting some amusing images of her trying.

(There's a lot of arm waving.)

Edward looked down, golden eye bright, before glancing over toward her.

"No. Apparently you can."

Meg looks back for a second, and then starts to laugh.

Accurately?

[themidnightson]

"Hardly."

[noteful]

"That's honestly a relief."

She shivers, even with the coat and all.

They've been sitting in the snow for a while now.

The glance over is coolly searching before he stands.

"We should go back in."

[noteful]

"Probably," she agrees, standing as well.

Now that she's noticed she's cold . . . she's really noticed she's cold.

His hands go into his slacks, but there is no semblance of cold in him. His movements are the same in warmth and cold, for the lack of layers that would make any difference.

"I have to get back." May have been more to himself, if calmly.

Meg is grateful for her layers, as they back down the path to the bar and everything else.

"I hope she's better soon."

"I'm sure she will."

Because Meg wouldn't like the plans he'd made for alternate eventualities, too. And he hadn't mentioned those to anyone at all.

"Good."

And from what Meg hears, the medical care in Edward's neck of the woods is excellent.

Though her sources may be a little biased.

All of them are. It's why she was transferred so quickly.

Edward walked beside her down the long path back to Milliways.
