He knows he should have done this long ago, and why he didn't, but there's almost no feeling to the words at all, an hour later, when he finally says them. Standing only a foot inside his house, the door just having latched itself by centrifical force, saying with full awareness they'll all hear him.

Her voice was a combination of concerned question and gentle but pointed rebuff as she instantly changed rooms. Two irises still in her fingers, not anymore relieved for the sight of her son on the landing.
