There's a lot that should and, Edward is already positive, can't be covered in words. Things he's not positive he wants to process anymore than won't ever be removed from his memory.
There's a still, shifting, almost gauging, in the dark eyes that looked back to her again, at the words he wasn't expecting. No less knowing quite how to take.
Except to just hold them like something thrust at him.
If anything he looks a little more blankly confused. At what to do or how. And if he does seem to almost, without moving inward, compress into even less space than he was taking up.
"I didn't ask how you've been." This sounds rather remarkably like both a just awoken realization, that he hasn't or that it even existed to be forgotten about being asked, and an apology.
He didn't ask really any of the last times. Not really.

Edward's focused shifted, abruptly. Beyond the booth, across the room.
Carlisle.
He never looked back, completely still again suddenly, and his voice and his expression are potentially too removed to even display the second of fear that spikes, when all he says is, "Meg."
He doesn't move. Doesn't look away. As if the entire bar had shrunk to one small space where Carlisle stood, unable not to recognize his voice in the din, too.
He finally shifted. Gaze moving back to Meg. Flicking, instantly, back to Carlisle as though he might entirely vanish not seen. But he didn't, hadn't. Back to Meg.
Too caustic. Potentially, the very stoic walled side of regretful.
